About the Questing Parson

Hello, I’m Guy Kent, the Questing Parson. Here’s the bio stuff.

The parson is Georgia born, and Georgia bred. And when he dies he’ll be Georgia dead. Hopefully, however, even though there’s been plenty of red clay squashed up between my toes, the experiences of life have extended my view well beyond the Georgia borders.

I’m a retired United Methodist pastor living in northwest Georgia. Retirement came a couple of years early for me. I was caught in one of those crazy situations where if I didn’t retire early I’d be financially penalized. So, unexpectedly on a Thursday it was decided I’d retire. That was about 11:00 a.m. Around 12:00 p.m. I was asked if I was going to live where I now live in retirement. I said I planned to. They asked me if I’d supply the pulpit of a church I’d served thirty years previously until they could find someone. I agreed. That was three years ago. Apparently, they’re having a difficult time finding someone.

I was a widower prior to my retirement. Shortly before the decision to retire I ran into a lady to whom I was pastor those thirty years prior. In fact, her father had been one of the charter members of the church I now supply. I asked her out. Forty-five days later we were married. It’s wonderful.

Lynn, my wife, works for the Department of Safety. That has advantages. State troopers know who my wife is. She’s also a stain glass artist. Her creations are amazing, and her reputation is growing. Visit the Ms. Parson page to see some of her work.

In January of 2006, my son, a school teacher who owns a web design company, encouraged me to start a blog. I didn’t know what a blog was. He took me on a tour of the blogger community and after talking me into trying it set up a page for me. That was the start. In the fall of that year he suggested to me that because of the traffic the blog was experiencing I should consider expanding it. We agreed that with the advent of 2007 the Questing Parson would expand to include the features you now see on the site.

I have to admit, this experience has really been satisfying. There is a true feeling of accomplishment whenever I post a writing by my self-imposed deadline. And the response to these pages has been both invigorating and humbling. On Sunday this parson preaches to maybe sixty people, if it’s a high attendance Sunday. But when I write something for the Questing Parson its for thousands. Go figure. The world is changing. We’re not in Kansas anymore.

I’ve worn a lot of hats in my life, pastor, businessman, juvenile court worker, military chaplain, and now I’ve donned the parson’s cap. I have to tell you, this is the most satisfying and challenging role I’ve had. My hope is you’ll find it interesting enough to come back soon.

Until then, remember: Looking for faith is where you find it.
